Creative approaches to construction recruitment

Supporting staff development

The challenge

A regional construction firm had an upturn in both the size and scale of their projects. Their projects included both residential and commercial developments ranging from a build value of £1m to £20m, with projects located across the UK. Their operational leadership team had previously held multifunctional roles including leading their teams on project management, quantity surveying and estimating. However, the scale of upcoming projects meant roles needed to become more distinct.

The solution

We spent time with the business leaders exploring their business dynamics, personalities and their drawn projects. We helped to identify which specific roles were required, including Project Management, Site Management, Quantity Surveying, Procurement and Estimating, and which of these could be achieved by upskilling existing staff and which required external recruitment, whether interim or permanent.

Our approach needed to consider budget restrictions and changing expectations as the rolling programme of developments was expected to flex over the next five years due to changes in the construction landscape and the timing of planning permissions and site preliminaries. We also needed to ensure geographical coverage and that the skill sets of professionals were balanced between delivering specialist knowledge and offering multi-faceted and adaptable experience.

The results

We secured interim placements to deliver on niche roles, providing rapid solutions that gave the client the ability to minimise delays in project delivery and keep their payroll costs down. We were also able to successfully place a range of candidates who didn’t immediately meet the full job description, but offered dynamic approaches and the exciting technical skills that would support business growth.

We supported the client with proposals that met with the ambitions of these candidates for salary and benefits as well as well as how they would be supported to develop their skill set. For some that included extended periods of temporary hire before transferring to permanent employment, and for others it involved our touch-base calls with our Jiggle Experts for the full six months of their probation.
