Crisis management for care homes

Solving urgent operational challenges

How has Jiggle supported care providers with urgently needed crisis management?

The challenge

A care home group was facing significant operational challenges at a site in Barnsley. Regulatory bodies, including the ICB, Fire Service, Care Quality Commission (CQC), and Health and Safety Executive (HSE), were taking action against them due to compliance failures. The Registered Manager had left unexpectedly without notice, creating a leadership gap.

The Nominated Individual, who also worked as a practising dental professional, was deeply concerned about the potential for personal liability arising from the compliance issues and urgently needed support to address these risks. At the same time, the business was struggling with severe staffing shortages within its frontline care team. The owners required someone to step in and manage the crisis without incurring excessive costs while they explored their options, including the potential sale of the business.

The solution

We completed a needs analysis within 24 hours. We matched the business owners and leaders with candidates from our UK network of Interim Consultants. Our proposed solution involved a dual approach: introducing a skilled Interim Consultant Manager to address compliance and operational challenges, alongside a consistent, block-booked team of temporary carers and registered nurses.

This ensured continuity of care, supported the existing staff, and tackled both compliance issues and safeguarding concerns. We carefully selected Interim Consultant Managers who not only possessed the necessary skills but also aligned with the site’s culture and stakeholders.

They were able to begin support immediately and within budget. Within 12 hours of their initial call to Jiggle, our Local Recruitment Experts had commenced the supply of temporary staff and established a rolling rota for the next three months. Within 72 hours, Jiggle had sourced and placed an Interim Consultant Manager on-site. They promptly reassured external stakeholders by presenting an action plan for the care home, addressing compliance issues, and mitigating concerns related to enforcement notices.

The results

Jiggle’s Local Account Expert worked closely with the Interim Consultant to provide the client with urgently needed crisis management. The consultant introduced strategic action planning and implementation, ensuring comprehensive responses to enforcement actions.

By involving an external, independent professional, the client was able to start fostering positive relationships with key stakeholders. At the same time, the client benefited from Jiggle’s ability to provide a single solution for both management support and frontline staffing needs. Jiggle successfully guided the group out of crisis, giving the business owners the time and space to make strategic decisions, including proceeding with a business sale.

Jiggle’s team also supported the safe decommissioning of the service. Following the sale, Jiggle has since been approached by the new owners to assist with the relaunch of the site.

Quote

“We had a care service in dire need of leadership with the regulator breathing down our neck. Recruitment takes time and we simply couldn’t afford to wait for permanent recruitment. We called Jiggle and gave them a brief of our situation. As they have experience as operators in health and social care they put together a solution that worked and didn’t just offer us a body to fill a role. They put together a comprehensive interim solution plan which put in place effective leadership, governance and made business sense. It didn’t cost the world and saved cost and stress in the long term. Well done team Jiggle.”
